From Paddock to Plate: The Heart of Horowhenua at Woodhaven Gardens

By Adrienne Newman

Nestled in the fertile plains of Horowhenua, Woodhaven Gardens is more than just a commercial vegetable grower — it’s a thriving example of what happens when sustainability, innovation, and community come together in harmony.

Founded in 1978 by father and son duo Eric and John Clarke, Woodhaven has grown into one of Aotearoa’s largest producers of fresh vegetables. With over 2,000 acres in production and 24 different crops grown across 127 paddocks, their reach is impressive — supplying around 10% of New Zealand’s vegetable supply.

But behind the numbers is a story of care. Woodhaven’s team of 250 staff, many of whom are locals, work year-round to ensure that every head of lettuce, bunch of broccoli, and tray of Leeks meets their high standards for freshness, taste, and quality. Their commitment to the land is just as strong — they’ve halved their fertiliser use and electricity consumption in recent years, thanks to precision agriculture and soil testing.

Growing with Purpose

Woodhaven Gardens doesn’t just grow vegetables — they grow relationships. Whether it’s sponsoring the Horowhenua College First XV rugby team, hosting visitors during the Horowhenua Taste Trail, or sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of life on the farm, their social media is a testament to their deep roots in the community.

Their approach to farming is refreshingly forward-thinking. They’re NZGAP certified, use GPS-guided tractors, and apply fertiliser with pinpoint accuracy to reduce environmental impact. It’s all part of their mission to leave the soil better than they found it — for future generations of growers and eaters alike.

Seasonal Spotlight: What’s Growing Now

As we settle into the heart of winter, Woodhaven Gardens is harvesting some of the season’s most comforting and versatile produce. Right now, you’ll find:

  • Leeks – perfect for soups, stews, and slow cooker magic

  • Silver beet – a nutrient-packed green that’s great sautéed or baked into pies

  • Broccoli – crisp, flavourful, and ideal for roasting or steaming

  • Cabbage – hearty and humble, perfect for stir-fries or slaws

These winter heroes are making their way into our Co-op bags, bringing warmth and nourishment to kitchens across the region.

Why It Matters to Us

At Hauora Kai, we believe in celebrating the growers who nourish our region — and Woodhaven Gardens embodies everything we stand for. Their produce fills our Co-op bags, their values align with our kaupapa, and their story inspires us to keep building a food system that’s local, sustainable, and full of heart.

So next time you cut into a crisp Woodhaven cabbage or sauté their silver beet, know that you’re tasting the care, innovation, and community spirit that makes Horowhenua proud.
